First Aid Tips - Sunburns

Staying in the sun to the point of sunburn is now considered unhealthy at any time, by the medical profession. Even once is too much. But, this advice notwithstanding, people will always flock to the beaches and stay longer than they should during summer vacation.

If you end up with a sunburn, these are some first aid tips to help with pain and healing:

1. Cool the sunburned area by placing cool, wet cloths over it but avoid rubbing the area. Just lay the cloths across the area and replace when cloth gets warm.

2. To break the blister or not break the blister.....what is best? Although it may be tempting to break sunburn blisters, it's best to leave them alone. Should they burst on their own, you can apply an antibiotic ointment.

3. Be sure to drink adequate fluids to keep your skin hydrated.

4. If you are over the age of 19, take aspirin or other analgesic for pain but do not give aspirin to children because the consumption of aspirin by children has now been linked to a very serious health condition called Reye's Syndrome.
